Careers on Wheels

Dear Parents,

Today the students go to participate in "Careers on Wheels" Day organized by our wonderful school counselors!  Our class got to learn about many types of jobs that involve some form of transportation.  It was really exciting to hear how many different jobs there are that rely on four or more wheels to get the job done!  The kids loved the chance to see inside and even get inside of most of the vehicles!  Thank you to all who came today to share about their chosen career!
Sincerely,

Week 33

Dear Parents,
This week in Kindergarten we learned about Earth.  We wrote ways that we love the Earth.  We recycled trash into special treasures! We took a walk around the Kemp campus and picked up trash.  We even made our very own recycling mini books!  All week we have gotten visits from Turbo Tyler and the Boosterthon team for getting pledges!  Each time they come, they cheer us on and share with us how important it is to be a team member!  On Friday, we celebrated Mrs. Priest's birthday with cupcakes and lots of flowers and cards!  We surprised her after lunch and it was so much fun!  Thank you to all the moms and our Room Moms (for bringing cupcakes and flowers) for coming in to share in this celebration!!!

Sincerely,

Happy Birthday!

Boosterthon

Dear Parents,

Boosterthon has begun!!!  The students got to attend the pep rally in the gym today and boy, were they excited!

This is a fabulous fundraiser for Kemp...52% of what we collect comes directly to us to help us pay for a Specialist (Spanish teacher) and our crossing guard!

The FUN RUN will take place on Thursday, May 3rd,  on the back field (weather permitting)...

  • 4th and 5th grade will run at 8
  • 2nd and 3rd will run at 9:30
  • K and 1 will run at 12:00

Parents and family are welcome to attend to cheer your little one as he or she runs laps!

The students brought home information in their folders today, so please take a look if you get a chance!

Our team name will be "Kazanjian's Kangaroos"!

One of the best benefits of participating in the fundraiser is the emphasis placed on improving student's self confidence... please click on the picture to visit their blog and/or read below for a description of this year's theme:

This fun, island-inspired theme is all about TEAMWORK.  We are all on teams—a sports team, a family, or a class. We feel that it is vitally important for students to grow character by being excellent team members. We want to specifically focus on growing teams inside the classroom.

The word "EPIC" is an acronym with each letter representing an Adventure Action.

Students will learn four specific ways to be a great teammate:

EEncourage – Team members build each other up with their words and never tear anyone down.

PPlay – It’s important for teams to exercise and play together outside, building friendships on the playground and in the neighborhood.

IInvite –Sometimes people may be outsiders or feel excluded from the group. Great teams see others on the sidelines and invite them into the group.

CCelebrate – Celebrating other’s victories is so important. Team members are not jealous of other’s successes; they celebrate with them and should applaud everyone’s accomplishments.

Thank you for your participation in this awesome fundraiser and please let me know if you have any questions!!!

Sincerely,

Weeks 31 and 32

Dear Parents,

Wow!  Time has flown by!  Sorry to get behind on the blog but hopefully the next four weeks will slow down just a little bit!!!  It seems like there is so much left to do!  Not as many pictures to share since we have been busy making surprises for both Mom and Dad!  Invitations went home for a special day to honor moms and dads, so we hope you are able to attend!  The kids enjoyed the field trip from Nana Nature and seeing how to make bread.

Thank you to Samantha's mom for sending in strawberries and bananas for our Pig Pancakes!  It was a yummy way to end our study of the book, Mrs. Wishy Washy!

We have been off schedule a little bit due to the CRCT.  The kids have done a great job of staying quiet in the classroom and the hallways!  Just two more days and then we should be back on schedule!

Thank you again for all the snacks sent in!  Don't forget to send in a self-addressed envelope so that I can send home the final report card.  Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Sincerely,

Week 30 Egg Hunt

Dear Parents,

The kids had lots of fun looking for Easter eggs during our Egg Hunt.  Thank you to Olivia's, Pedro's, Samantha's, and Tyler's moms for coming in to hide all the eggs!  Thank you also to Pedro's mom for bringing confetti eggs for the kids to "crack" open for a neat surprise!  What fun!

Sincerely,

Week 30

Dear Parents,

This week the kids were busy, busy, busy learning and having fun!  Our theme this week focused on plants.  We looked at different types of seeds and bulbs.  We used magnifying glasses to observe the different parts of a plant.  We planted  flower seeds and lima beans to observe growth.  We worked in our Plant Journal to keep up with all we have learned this week.  In Math, we continued our investigation into addition by using dominoes to make a number sentence.  We used our bead sticks to double check our counting.  We reviewed numbers to thirty by clipping clothespins to number word cards and we worked on the smart board using a bubble gum graph lesson.  We got to paint real eggs with the help of Pedro's mom and dad.  The kids had so much fun painting designs on their very own eggs!  We got our faces painted and had a visit from our Book Buddies.  They helped us make the most amazing butterflies!  They are gigantic!  Thank you, Book Buddies!

Week 29

Dear Parents,

The students had another busy week in Kindergarten.  We painted flowers for the cover of our Plant Journals.  We learned about the parts of a flower and got to take apart a real flower and observe it with a magnifying glass.  We also visited the Art Show and saw our own works of art on display!

Week 28

Dear Parents,

This week we focused on soil.  The kids got to examine their soil samples and even see how worms move in the soil.  We did an experiment with sugar cubes in water to see how rocks can break down over time to become soil and sand.  We also observed sand with our magnifying glasses as well as a microscope. Our sand art pictures were fun to make but I think the kids really enjoyed smearing mud all over their pig pictures!

Sincerely,

Week 28 Saint Patrick's Day Centers!

Dear Parents,

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!  The students had a great time visiting our special centers today.  They got to make their own rainbow/pot of gold card at the Shamrock Art table with Mrs. Priest and Aria's mom.  We found out that Pedro is very ticklish...especially when his hand is being painted!  The Shamrock Shake center was a hit as well.  The kids loved tasting the shakes mixed up by Ansley's mom and snacking on cookies made by Olivia's mom.  The Lucky Charms Graph center stayed busy as Sofia's mom helped the kids get their materials ready so they could sort their cereal!  The kids got to write what they would do if they found the leprechaun's treasure at the Pot of Gold center with Olivia's mom.  Every sentence written correctly earned them a gold coin!  The Leprechaun, Leprechaun What Do You See center had the kids reading the pattern book and pasting number words to match the numeral with me.  A fun time was had by all.

Once we returned from lunch we discovered that a little leprechaun had made a huge mess in our room.  We saw that our trap was down so we lifted it up only to find that our gold was gone.  In its place was a shamrock clue.  We followed the clues around the building and ended up back at our classroom where we found the leprechaun's gold!!  What a special day it was.  Thank you to all our moms for coming in to help with centers and for all the donations supplied to make it such a success!

Sincerely,

Week 27

Dear Parents,

Our rock unit "rocked" with the kids!  They loved going on the rock hunt and collecting their very own rocks.  We came back to the room and looked at what we found.  We cleaned them and sorted them and had so much fun!  Each student made a pet rock and took care of it all week!  We wrapped up the week by reading the book Stone Soup by Ann McGovern and making our own vegetable beef "stone" soup.  We also got to eat rocks...Pop Rocks candy.  It was a real treat to have all the kids quiet at once to listen to the "popping" sound! Thank you for sharing your kids with us here at Kemp Elementary!

Sincerely,

Week 26

Dear Parents,
This week we learned about living and non-living things.  We wrapped up the week by heading out to the Kemp Garden to draw illustrations with labels in our books.  In Writing, we worked on individual stories in our journals.  In Math, we focused on number words to ten.  On Friday, we celebrated Pajama Day and Dr. Seuss' birthday with yummy Thing One and Two cupcakes!  It was a fun-filled day!
