Week 11 Motion cont.

Dear Parents,
This week the kids finished up our study of motion by heading out to the Kemp Garden to observe insects in motion.  Armed with magnifying glasses, journals, and tons of curiosity, the students investigated how insects use motion to “hop”, “crawl”, and “fly” from flower to flower.  There were plenty of insects and the kids had a great time exploring all the creatures in the garden.  Then we headed to the pavilion to journal our findings!  Everyone was excited to show what they discovered!   With early dismissal each day due to Conference Week, we did our best to squeeze in as much learning as possible.  In Math, we focused on decomposing the numeral 5 by breaking it apart into two smaller groups, counting to 100, and making sets to equal a written numeral up to 30.  In Writing, we focused on writing a sentence to include a capital letter, punctuation, and sounding out simple words by using the reading strategy “Stretchy Snake”.  In Reading, we continue to build confidence by reading “just right” books that the students are able to read using strategies introduced in class.  We reviewed what a sentence, word, and letter look like and sorted them into groups.  We also were able to visit the Computer Lab as a class on Friday to visit www.starfall.com.  The kids love this site as it is quite engaging and offers lots of variety to practice alphabet skills as well as beginning reading practice.  Thank you to all parents for coming in for conferences.  It was so nice to have a chance to sit and talk about your child with you.  Hope you all have a great week!

Week 10 Motion and JRFH

Dear Parents,
This week in Kindergarten the students wrapped up our study of shapes by completing a Shapes mini book and building shapes from marshmallows and toothpicks.  We also spent time learning about "Motion".  We watched a BrainPop Jr. video on how things move.  We acted out several different ways to move our bodies during Morning Songs (we have some future dancers in our room).  We also got to visit Motion Centers.  The kids had a chance to catapult marshmallows across the room, fly paper airplanes in the hall, race to see who could use a straw to blow a cotton ball across the finish line and build a ramp that would make a toy car travel the farthest.  Thursday our Book Buddies came to read us a special Halloween story.  Friday we went out to the bus port to participate in Jump Rope for Heart.  Wow!  Those kids can really  keep moving!  They had lots of fun!   I look forward to meeting with parents to discuss progress during Conference Week!
Sincerely,

Week 9 Christopher Columbus and Carlton Dairy Farm

Dear Parents,
This week, we learned about Christopher Columbus, the explorer!  Wow!  He was a patient man to wait as long as he did to reach his goal!  We are thankful for his persistence!!!  The kids has so much fun on our field trip today to Carlton Dairy Farm.  We got to visit the animals and watch baby cows get fed.  We saw baby chicks, a rooster, hens, eggs waiting to hatch and sweet sleeping pigs.  On our hayride we saw the barn where the cows are milked and we got to stop and feed the cows.  They were everywhere!  It was so cool to hold they hay and watch the cows come right up to us!  The kids had a blast finding their way through the corn field and even more fun exploring the play area!  The huge slide was a favorite for everyone!  I want to thank our chaperones today for coming with us and helping keep everyone together.  Amber Eyer, Lizette Prater, and our TOSS student, Kim Westwood, really made this a fun event.

Week 8 Apples and Animal Babies

Dear Parents,
This week the kids focused on "Animal Babies" by reading several books on the topic, both fiction and non-fiction.  We learned that animal babies look like their parents and need their parents just as much as we did when we were babies.  The kids had lots of fun on Tuesday at Apple Centers.  They loved eating, counting, playing, making, and learning!  Thank you, parents, for all of your donations to this event!
Have a great weekend!

Well, I hope to never be sick again!!!  (knocking on wood!!)  We were off to a great start this week since I dealt with the disappearing pictures on the sd card last week and I got 7 super pictures during  our math partner games before disaster struck again!!  I am really hoping this week goes peacefully.  Last week the kids worked on learning about animal features by making an Animals on the Go book and by sorting pictures of different animal features.  Apple Centers are rescheduled for this Wednesday.  Please check the sidebar for the October calendar...PE is our specials for tomorrow.  Thank you for the well wishes and hope you all enjoy your evening!
