Week 11 Motion cont.

Dear Parents,
This week the kids finished up our study of motion by heading out to the Kemp Garden to observe insects in motion.  Armed with magnifying glasses, journals, and tons of curiosity, the students investigated how insects use motion to “hop”, “crawl”, and “fly” from flower to flower.  There were plenty of insects and the kids had a great time exploring all the creatures in the garden.  Then we headed to the pavilion to journal our findings!  Everyone was excited to show what they discovered!   With early dismissal each day due to Conference Week, we did our best to squeeze in as much learning as possible.  In Math, we focused on decomposing the numeral 5 by breaking it apart into two smaller groups, counting to 100, and making sets to equal a written numeral up to 30.  In Writing, we focused on writing a sentence to include a capital letter, punctuation, and sounding out simple words by using the reading strategy “Stretchy Snake”.  In Reading, we continue to build confidence by reading “just right” books that the students are able to read using strategies introduced in class.  We reviewed what a sentence, word, and letter look like and sorted them into groups.  We also were able to visit the Computer Lab as a class on Friday to visit www.starfall.com.  The kids love this site as it is quite engaging and offers lots of variety to practice alphabet skills as well as beginning reading practice.  Thank you to all parents for coming in for conferences.  It was so nice to have a chance to sit and talk about your child with you.  Hope you all have a great week!
Sincerely,

Week 10 Motion and JRFH

Dear Parents,
This week in Kindergarten the students wrapped up our study of shapes by completing a Shapes mini book and building shapes from marshmallows and toothpicks.  We also spent time learning about "Motion".  We watched a BrainPop Jr. video on how things move.  We acted out several different ways to move our bodies during Morning Songs (we have some future dancers in our room).  We also got to visit Motion Centers.  The kids had a chance to catapult marshmallows across the room, fly paper airplanes in the hall, race to see who could use a straw to blow a cotton ball across the finish line and build a ramp that would make a toy car travel the farthest.  Thursday our Book Buddies came to read us a special Halloween story.  Friday we went out to the bus port to participate in Jump Rope for Heart.  Wow!  Those kids can really  keep moving!  They had lots of fun!   I look forward to meeting with parents to discuss progress during Conference Week!

Week 9 Christopher Columbus and Carlton Dairy Farm

Dear Parents,
This week, we learned about Christopher Columbus, the explorer!  Wow!  He was a patient man to wait as long as he did to reach his goal!  We are thankful for his persistence!!!  The kids has so much fun on our field trip today to Carlton Dairy Farm.  We got to visit the animals and watch baby cows get fed.  We saw baby chicks, a rooster, hens, eggs waiting to hatch and sweet sleeping pigs.  On our hayride we saw the barn where the cows are milked and we got to stop and feed the cows.  They were everywhere!  It was so cool to hold they hay and watch the cows come right up to us!  The kids had a blast finding their way through the corn field and even more fun exploring the play area!  The huge slide was a favorite for everyone!  I want to thank our chaperones today for coming with us and helping keep everyone together.  Amber Eyer, Lizette Prater, and our TOSS student, Kim Westwood, really made this a fun event.

Week 8 Apples and Animal Babies

Dear Parents,
This week the kids focused on "Animal Babies" by reading several books on the topic, both fiction and non-fiction.  We learned that animal babies look like their parents and need their parents just as much as we did when we were babies.  The kids had lots of fun on Tuesday at Apple Centers.  They loved eating, counting, playing, making, and learning!  Thank you, parents, for all of your donations to this event!
Have a great weekend!

Week 7 Animal Features

Dear Parents,
Well, I hope to never be sick again!!!  (knocking on wood!!)  We were off to a great start this week since I dealt with the disappearing pictures on the sd card last week and I got 7 super pictures during  our math partner games before disaster struck again!!  I am really hoping this week goes peacefully.  Last week the kids worked on learning about animal features by making an Animals on the Go book and by sorting pictures of different animal features.  Apple Centers are rescheduled for this Wednesday.  Please check the sidebar for the October calendar...PE is our specials for tomorrow.  Thank you for the well wishes and hope you all enjoy your evening!

Week 6 Community Workers

Dear Parents,
I had some really great pictures of our week and sadly I lost all the pictures on my SD card.  I'm so bummed out!  I hate that I lost a whole week's worth of pictures as well as the rest of the photos I had on it!  Not sure what went wrong but tried everything I could to retrieve the lost pictures!  So sad!
Hopefully this will be the only time this happens!

Week 5 My Community

Dear Parents,
What a busy week!  We got a visit from Brennen’s grandmother, Mrs. Finch, who made chair pockets for our classroom!  They are amazing and absolutely perfect!  Thank you, Mrs. Finch!!!  The students learned about their continent, country, state, county, city, and neighborhood this week by making a flip book (we have just one page to add to it on Monday).  It turned out cute!  We worked on our math skills this week with our table buddies by ordering numbers from 1-20, forming numerals correctly, making designs with our pattern blocks, and seeing the different ways to make 4.  We got to visit the Book Fair on Friday with our Book Buddies!  They helped the kids make their wish lists and were a great help!!!  Thank you 5th Grade!!!  We celebrated Brennen's birthday on Wednesday and enjoyed the yummy cupcakes his mom brought!  Shawn E. was our Star Student and he did a great job of being our line leader this week!

Dress Up Days for September 10-14

Week 4 Home and Family

Dear Parents,
This week in Kindergarten we "focused on the family".  The students shared about who is in their families and made their very own family homes.  We learned that while families may look different they all love, share, play, work, and do many fun things together.  We completed math table activities to help us learn to count one and only one object per number.  We are practicing daily to count to 50.  We had great fun during free choice centers.  The students are doing a great job of helping clean up afterwards, too.  We wrapped up the week with mini pizzas for the letter Pp and a trip to the Media Center for story time and check out!   Bailey J. was our Star Student this week and we loved how her poster turned out!

Week 3 My Five Senses

Dear Parents,
This week in Kindergarten the kids worked on learning a little about the five senses each day!   We made a counting book on Monday by using our bingo dot markers to fill in a ten frame for the numbers 1-10 and played a partner game by rolling a die and counting to see who had more.  We also played a "Brown Bear Brown Bear" graph and count math game after reading the book by Bill Martin Jr. We practiced the Daily 5 by building stamina working independently in our Writing Folders.  We talked about the class friends we have made and posted our names on a chart.  Then the kids got to draw a new friend they had made and label the picture with a name from the chart.  We practiced "Read to Someone" where we are learning 3 ways to share a book:  "read" the pictures, read the words, and retell the story using the pictures.  We met with our Book Buddies on Thursday.  They have been so nice to help us choose "just right" books!  We ended the week by learning about the sense of taste.  We sampled some salty, sour, and sweet foods and then sorted pictures to match!  Kaelyn R. was our Star Student this week and we loved seeing her 3 favorite things on Thursday!

First Week Photos 2012-2013

Dear Parents,
What a fun first week we had in Kindergarten!  We spent time getting to know each other and the new rules and procedures of Kindergarten.  On our first day we opened up our magic play dough to see if it would change colors...it did, so we will have a "magical" year for sure!!!  We toured the school and took pictures of all the people who work at Kemp.  We learned to walk on the 2nd square and that we use our marshmallow toes in the hallway!  We read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin, Jr. and made our own trees with our names to display in our hallway.  In Math, we connected cubes to see which table had the tallest tower.  We visited Specials teachers and played on the playground.  I think the kids did a great job adjusting to their new schedule and I am looking forward to a wonderful year spent learning, growing, and laughing!!
